For consumer teams the situation is less measurable but even more dire as hundreds of millions of human years worth of time pass through tools that aren’t as good as we know they can be. Every day we need to ask how we can do better tomorrow, and then find a way to make it happen today. There are lots of ways to achieve this. Maybe we can parallelize work. Maybe we need to reduce what we are doing and focus our energies better. Maybe we can be more efficient. Maybe we need to reinvest in underlying technology. Whatever the answer, we need to approach this with a deep seated Sense of Urgency, realizing that every minute we delay really matters.

Service Oriented Organization

When someone approaches you with a problem, simply imagine you were the CEO of your own company and that person was a client. We should spend it with a level of care befitting its nature. While few of us would ask to borrow money from one another regularly, many of us casually barrage one another with meetings, messages, and quick visits which tax a much more precious commodity. In addition to the high cost of a context switch, interruptions are often the vehicle by which the urgent triumphs over the important. The burden falls to those of us who would interrupt someone to ensure it is truly worth the cost.

Say No

Saying yes is so much easier than saying no, but nobody else will ever value your time as much as you do so you need to be a responsible steward of it. Say No to meetings. Say No to interruptions. Say No to things that are urgent but not important. And never be afraid to step back and take stock; time spent thinking about where you spend your time is an investment that pays for itself.

The Hacker Way

At its core, hacking is an approach to problem solving. It is both humble and optimistic in its conviction that anything that has been built, including by the hacker herself, can be improved. It does not believe that done is better than perfect so much as it believes that being done sooner is the best path to eventual perfection, though it is also skeptical that perfection exists.

The Path Matters

In technology we are constantly looking to the future and trying to see things the way the could be. Once we have a vision we want to work towards we tend to choose the shortest path to get to that place. On projects of sufficiently narrow scope this is clearly the right thing to do. When it comes to strategy, however, our success has come from not concerning ourselves with the entire path to the goal but rather focusing primarily on the next step in that direction. By taking one step at a time and iterating we are able to adapt quickly to a constantly changing landscape and bring our users along for the ride.
